Where Is the Calm?

There is a phrase we’ve all heard at some point in our lives:

“There’s always calm after the storm.”

Lately, I’ve found myself wondering…

Where is it?

Not because life has been terrible. Not because there haven’t been moments of joy, gratitude, or progress. But because it seems like every time one challenge begins to settle, another one takes its place.

Maybe that’s adulthood.

Or maybe it’s just life.

At the beginning of this year, I chose the word recalibration. My hope was to become more intentional, more aligned, and less driven by urgency. I pictured this year as a season of resetting. A time to make adjustments and eventually feel like I had found solid ground again.

Instead, there have been moments when I’ve questioned whether I’ve recalibrated at all.

Unexpected expenses replace financial goals.

Career opportunities don’t always unfold on the timeline I imagined.

Fitness requires more patience than motivation.

The economy continues to create uncertainty.

The world feels heavier than it did just a few years ago, and it often seems like every headline reminds us that another challenge is waiting around the corner.

I’ve been wondering lately if one of the biggest misconceptions we carry is the belief that life eventually reaches a point where everything stabilizes. That one day we’ll arrive, look around, and think, Finally. The hard part is over.

It makes me wonder if many of us are chasing an idea of life that doesn’t actually exist.

We’re taught that if we work hard enough, eventually we’ll arrive at a place where everything settles down.

Finish school.

Build the career.

Save the money.

Reach the goal.

Weather the storm.

Then the calm comes.

But what if life isn’t designed that way?

We tell people the calm comes after the storm. But what happens when another storm arrives before you’ve recovered from the first? At what point do you stop waiting for life to become easy and start redefining what peace actually means?

What if there isn’t one final season where everything finally feels stable?

What if peace isn’t the absence of uncertainty? What if it’s learning to live well even when uncertainty never completely leaves?

Maybe there isn’t one final calm. Maybe life is a series of storms and calm waters, and sometimes they overlap. You can be grateful and exhausted. Successful and uncertain. Hopeful while wondering how much longer things will be difficult.

Maybe that’s why so many of us feel conflicted.

Successful in one area while struggling in another.

We can be making progress while simultaneously wondering how much longer the road will be.

The more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve realized that maybe I’ve been defining recalibration too narrowly.

I assumed recalibration would feel like everything falling into place.

Maybe it was never supposed to.

Maybe recalibration isn’t about reaching a destination where life suddenly becomes easier. Maybe it’s about changing how we move through whatever life brings next.

Because when I stop looking only at the outcomes, I can see the changes that have happened.

I’ve become more intentional with my decisions.

I’ve stayed committed to goals even when the results have been slower than I hoped.

Those things may not have changed my circumstances overnight, but they have changed me.

Maybe this season isn’t asking me to find the calm.

Maybe it’s asking me to learn that peace and uncertainty can exist at the same time.

And maybe that realization is its own kind of recalibration.
