Hey there, friend! I hope you’re doing well and your 2025 is off to a great start. To kickoff 2025, the first blog of the year will discuss the pressures of social media. It will also cover the unsolicited advice it brings. Especially when it comes to the various influencers, dating advice, achieving milestones by a certain age, and setting boundaries. No matter where you log in, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, you will find influencers and experts. They want to share their generalized opinions, dos and don’ts, latest hacks, and experiences. It’s a lot to sort, right? It can leave you feeling confused and defeated, especially with contradictory information.
It is easy to forget that social media oftentimes provides a false illusion and insight into another person’s life. Before you know it, you’re caught up in scrolling. You’re seeing everyone else’s perfect relationships, career advancements, body goals, and other milestone accomplishments. Then, suddenly, the comparison sets in, and you begin to feel like you’re falling behind or not doing enough. Keep in mind that social media does not give us a full view of someone’s life. Everyone has ups and downs and is not broadcasting their lives in its entirety to the world.
When it comes to dating, social media (the various dating apps) can add an extra layer of pressure. It seems like everyone is finding “the one” and posting about their perfect dates, engagements, and weddings. Then you also have those offering advice on what you should and shouldn’t do when it comes to love. So many influencers share their thoughts on attachment styles and opinions of “if he does this, he doesn’t like you.” But here’s the thing: there are many nuances and complexities to individuals. Dating is complex. People are not one dimensional. There’s no deadline for finding love, and there is no perfect partner. The most important thing is to find someone who makes you happy and who respects you for who you are. Don’t let social media rush you into something that doesn’t feel right or feel guilty for your relationship choices.
There’s also this unspoken pressure to achieve certain milestones by a certain point in your life. These milestones include graduating, landing your dream job, buying a house, or starting a family. The pressure is on to have all of this done before reaching your 40s. We are not born with a manual. We are all here to follow our own life paths. Each of us has different purposes to carry out and fulfill. What matters is that you’re moving forward, making progress, and doing what feels right for you.
One of the most empowering things you can do is set boundaries—both online and offline. It’s okay to regularly break from social media. Curate your feed to reflect content that aligns with your core beliefs and values.
It is perfectly okay to limit what influences influence you.
